In Memoriam: Duncan McMillan
Renowned criminal defense lawyer Duncan McMillan died Aug. 27. He was 72.
McMillan began practicing law in Raleigh in 1977, concentrating on criminal defense at the firm McMillan & Smith. He was a leader in NCAJ’s Criminal Defense Section, belonged to the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and was a past president of the Wake County Academy of Criminal Trial Lawyers. McMillan was an NCAJ member from 1978 to 2020.
McMillan attended Wake Forest University as an undergraduate and earned his law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In its memorialization, The News & Observer remembered him as “Raleigh’s Atticus Finch.” His father was legendary lawyer Robert Leroy McMillan.
