In Memoriam: Bruce A. Elmore Jr.

Bruce A. Elmore Jr. died July 24. He was 72. 

Elmore practiced law in Asheville for 48 years.  He served on the board of directors of the ACLU of Western North Carolina for over two decades, and on the state board for 15 years, including multiple terms as president and vice president. In 2024, he was honored with the Evan Mahaney Champion of Civil Liberties Award for his lifelong advocacy. He also served as a volunteer litigator before the North Carolina Supreme Court and frequently represented clients pro bono.

He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law. Elmore was a member of NCAJ from 1977 to 2022.
