July 02, 2024

Matt Ballew and PJ Puryear have formed Ballew Puryear PLLC, where they will specialize in all forms of catastrophic personal injury matters as well as complex civil litigation cases, including pre-trial litigation, jury trial advocacy and appellate advocacy in both state and federal courts.

A native of North Carolina, Ballew grew up in Marion. He graduated summa cum laude from North Carolina State University, receiving a B.A. with honors in history and a B.A. in political science. He went on to receive his law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He is proud to have served in numerous leadership capacities with NCAJ, including as chair of the Professional Negligence Section and a term on the Board of Governors beginning in 2014. He regularly writes and presents in connection with continuing legal education seminars in the areas of medical malpractice and civil litigation. He has co-authored and served on moot court panels for numerous amicus curiae briefs to the North Carolina Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.

Puryear is a member of NCAJ’s Auto Torts & Premises Liability Section and Professional Negligence Section. He earned his law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law.

Puryear brings over a decade of trial and appellate experience to the firm, including trying cases in state and federal court, before the American Arbitration Association and the North Carolina Office of Administrative Hearings.

Puryear’s complex commercial litigation practice has included cases involving contractual disputes, intra-corporate disputes, unfair and deceptive trade practices, embezzlement, breach of fiduciary duty and derivative claims. His practice will now expand into civil rights, medical malpractice, motor vehicle accidents, premises liability, and maritime law.
