Jim Barnes, member at Oxendine Barnes & Associates PLLC, is a seasoned and dedicated trial attorney with over two decades of experience. As a litigator, he has successfully handled unique and complex cases representing various clients in administrative, state and federal court proceedings in North Carolina. His practice is focused primarily in the areas of personal injury, medical malpractice, wrongful death claims and other complex civil litigation matters.
Jim’s passion for listening to others, coupled with a strong desire to help make a difference in people’s lives, was a major reason why he decided to become a lawyer. His work at Oxendine Barnes & Associates allows him to spend quality time with all of his clients to assess the facts, analyze their claims and prepare specific strategies for addressing their individual needs.
Jim is a Raleigh native who graduated from Ravenscroft before attending UNC-Chapel Hill. At UNC, he was honored to serve as the President of his Fraternity, serving as a Senior Class Marshall, and member of the Order of the Bell Tower. While attending the Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, Alabama, he was selected to The Order of Barristers, made Dean’s list, earned the Certificate of Merit for Research and Writing, served as a Trial Advocacy Executive Board Member, and was a semi-finalist in the Haley Federal Trial Competition. He was recognized as a “Super Lawyer” in 2020 and 2021.
After obtaining admission to practice in both Alabama and North Carolina, Jim was honored to clerk for Justice George Wainwright at the North Carolina Supreme Court. Following his clerkship, he spent the next eight years honing his trial advocacy skills while representing insurance companies, self-insured corporations and many other clients throughout North Carolina. Today, he is able to use his defense-oriented background to help better analyze strategies and solutions at Oxendine Barnes & Associates.
Jim is married and the proud father of two boys. Outside the office, he enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf and following the Tar Heels.
