November 30, 2023

Meredith Barbee is one of the 13 members of the NCAJ NEXT Leadership Program class of 2024. The program identifies the state’s emerging trial lawyer leaders.

Lives in: Concord

Law degree from: Charlotte School of Law

Works as: Solo Practitioner at Meredith Barbee Law

Legal Association Involvement: I am a new member of NCAJ, but have been a member of the N.C. Bar Association for a while and take advantage of their numerous CLE opportunities. I am a member of the Cabarrus County Bar, the ABA, the Girl Attorney Group, and the Family Law and Criminal Justice sections of the N.C. Bar Association.

I was licensed in 2012 but took a break from practice to raise my family and worked in the education sector. I have recently begun a solo practice and ventured back into the legal field. I am currently on the appointed counsel list in Cabarrus County and want to learn as much as possible and eventually serve as a leader in the field of criminal defense.

Why is the idea of criminal justice important to you?

I see people in difficult or nearly impossible situations in my work as appointed defense counsel every day. I see the way that bond policies disparately affect those in poverty, the way that lack of access to justice and fairness can quickly have a compounding affect on someone’s life, and the positive impact that we can have when we treat criminal clients with dignity and respect. I want to find ways to make changes that support equal access to justice and help people to build up their lives rather than to put them on a downward spiral.

What’s your vision for the future of NCAJ?

I hope that it can be an organization that supports lawyers in their individual cases, as well as promotes systemic change to policies and removes barriers to speedy and fair justice.     Impact local policies and procedures that have a negative impact on fairness and justice in North Carolina.

Away from work …

I have four children that keep me very busy! I also love to read, crochet, spend time on Badin Lake with my family, and have adventures like skiing, wakeboarding, and hiking.
